About Philippa
I’m Philippa, and I’m a third-year student at the University of Canberra, studying a Bachelor of Secondary Education (Arts). I’m a competent and passionate teacher and an enthusiastic student, something I hope to foster in teens in my career. My studies are specializing in societies of the Ancient Mediterranean region, creative writing, and post-Romantic English literature and criticism. I have broad areas of interest outside these fields that I am happy to teach, including Australian history, global 20th century history, Renaissance literature and poetry, sustainability and environmental change and management, and human rights. I’m also comfortable tutoring off the standard curriculum in Math from years 7-10, having achieved a 95 in my HSC exam for Math Standard 2, but I am not able to tutor Senior Math. My preferred senior subjects are English (all levels) and Ancient History, but I’m happy to tutor in Modern History also. I hold a current Working with Vulnerable People check (ACT) and a Working with Children Check (NSW), which I am happy to present upon request. I also have a full NSW driver's license and my own car to travel within the ACT if needed. My ATAR was 94.90 if you care about that :)

I believe that a blended approach to learning is the best, using a mix of interactive and creative techniques as well as more traditional methods. I like to find contemporary materials and media to supplement or reframe those provided by schools, hopefully making sessions more relevant and enjoyable to the kids. I will encourage students to engage in deeper learning and assist them in reaching their own conclusions by engaging in debate and discussion. I prefer to teach using pen-and-paper with technology used to supplement activities, rather than all work being completed on a computer. This results in improved retention and deeper learning, as well as preparing kids for hours-long pen-and-paper exams in college and university. Because of this, face-to-face lessons are preferred, but I am happy to do online sessions if this is not practicable. I am happy to offer lessons between 30 and 90 minutes. I have some experience working with students with additional learning needs as well as those in mainstream education, and I am happy to teach both of these. My expertise is best applied to secondary students but I am willing to teach students from Year 4 and up upon request.
