About Donna Kay

I am retired. I taught high school English for five years at the beginning of my career and spent five years teaching all classroom subjects in a self-contained, special education classroom at the end. In the interim I was a middle-manager in Corrections, supervising fifteen professional staff and 256 inmates for eighteen years to which I was promoted from Caseworker I and II positions over an eight year period. I also held several other varied/interesting jobs in my life. I played the violin for eleven years and am now learning the piano. I'm an avid reader of all books, especially historical romances. When I was in the middle of my life, I rented myself out as a witch, wild hair, nose, warts et al. I produced and directed three plays in my early teaching career which were outstanding. I have a way with words and have always been a captivating/articulate speaker and writer. I have written speeches/papers for other professionals. I live in Washington, MO.

About the lesson

I approach teaching with passion and creativity. I seek to engage the minds, hearts and souls of my students so that they come to care about what I am teaching and invest themselves in the class by being who they really are and sharing their unique/creative ideas/thoughts. I affirm them at every opportunity to encourage their growth, both as persons and in the skills they needed to gain from the class. I use whatever methods occur to me to keep the students engaged and learning. I once taught transitive/action verbs by throwing a small box around the room to have each thrower say a sentence describing the activity using a transitive verb. My administrator was out in the hall listening and thought I was crazy, but he was a "stick in the mud".

Details

My rates will not vary according to the level of the student. I will not travel much outside of Washington. I well set a fifteen mile radius as my limit, but prefer that they come to me. I will expect full payment if I do not receive 24 hour notice of any cancellation.
