About Martina
I am currently studying Chemistry, Medicinal and Biological Chemistry at the University of York, having achieved A grades in both A-level Biology and Chemistry, and an A* in my EPQ, which explored areas of Biochemistry. I have experience working with young people of all abilities, including children with learning disabilities and special needs.
Having recently completed A-levels myself, I understand how intimidating science can feel for many students, and how much of a difference the right teacher can make to their confidence and ability to overcome accademic challenges. I find it really rewarding to help students develop their own curiosity and enthusiasm for Biology and Chemistry, and to see their confidence grow alongside their academic progress.

I create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. In a typical lesson, I use worked examples to demonstrate how to approach a question, explaining my thought process and the reasoning behind each step, before working through examples together. Students then tackle questions independently, allowing me to identify gaps in their understanding and provide targeted feedback.
I aim to help students develop a deeper understanding of Chemistry and Biology, so they do not have to rely on memorisation during their exams. My goal is for students to understand the reasoning behind concepts and develop the logical thinking and pattern recognition needed to tackle unfamiliar questions independently.
I integrate scientific theory into worked exam questions so students can see how they are required to apply the knowledge they learn in class to exam scenarios. I also place a strong emphasis on exam technique, including understanding what questions are asking, using mark schemes effectively, and producing clear, concise answers that address the required points, helping students work efficiently under time pressure.
I tutor GCSE and A-level Chemistry and Biology, with lessons typically lasting 60 minutes, however the lesson duration can be adapted to suit the student.
