About Austin
Growing up in a former plantation home gave me a greater appreciation for the past at a young age. This drove me to study history at a formal level at the University of California Los Angeles. While living in LA, I volunteered with the local homeless and LGBTQ centers to tutor students looking to get their GED. I found this effort to be extremely rewarding but my own studies of the ancient Mediterranean world brought the opportunity to work at the Vatican Museum and complete my own research in their vast archives. While living abroad I gave English guided tours of the Vatican, Rome, and surrounding archeological sites. I also tutored students going to the United Nations International School in history as well as English. The pandemic brought me back to my home state of South Carolina and into the world of higher education. I do miss engaging with students on a one on one level and hope to foster a better appreciation of the past in all those I fortunate enough tutor!

It is human nature to continuously learn and discover new things. What better subject than the combined human narrative we call history? I wish to help humanize these stories and connect them to our present to further support our understanding of the past. History is often mislabeled as boring or trapped only on the pages of a book. My personal experience working on archeological dig sites and as a tour guide in Rome helps me to connect our reality with those of our ancestors.
My tutoring plans are individualized and focus on the needs and interest of the student. By personally catering the subject matter and strategies to the student, I help ensure retention as well as entertainment. I have worked with students of all ages from young kids just learning about the pyramids to senior scholars wanting to expand their horizons.
