About April
I want you to know that I will always have your best interest. I work with you on where you are, then we set goals together, and work together to reach those goals. I want to see you do your best, but I also want you to enjoy the experience as well. I will differentiate lessons to make them more engaging for you and they will not become so boring or repetitive. I encourage your input in helping me establish a great working relationship with you. I have worked with many students over the thirteen years I taught in private and public school, from Kindergarten to 12th grade. I find teaching a joy and something I have always enjoyed doing because I love to see students succeed.

When I work with a student one on one, I like to meet them where they are, not where they should be. I incorporate games and other engaging learning activities to make reading, spelling, and grammar fun. A typical tutoring session will include a quick game (review), a focus activity (hands-on or online game) on the topic we are working on that week, and then reading a decodable text or nonfiction passage. I have many years of experience teaching in the classroom, but I also have worked at Sylvan Learning Centers as a tutor, provided my own tutoring to students in my classes or school, and I am currently teaching my own son who is dyslexic in homeschool. I am up to date on the latest Orton Gillingham techniques and I use the Science of Reading to guide my lessons. In addition to teaching elementary students, I also have helped high school and college students in study skills and standardized test preparation.
