About Marley

I am a native English speaker based in Los Angeles, California. For my lesson plans, I incorporate elements of social sciences, the arts, and history into a curriculum that is both engaging and informative to my tutees who come from different backgrounds.

About the lesson

My lessons are for elementary and middle school students (grades 1-8) as well as those who speak English as a second language and need to improve their proficiency. I bring lots of enthusiasm to my lessons and always make sure the tutee is comfortable with expressing their needs during our time together. Tutees do not need to have structured homework assignments to work with me. I am happy to help them sharpen their literacy by reading books about things they are interested in with them. For the sessions without homework, I can familiarize the tutee with new words they see in the book through writing exercises and provide them with the opportunity to write a summary of what they read.

To find content for my lessons, I collaborate with my tutees and/or their parents to identify subject matter they’d like to work on or learn. I then help them create a goal for the session. After the goal is established, I guide the three through the necessary steps to make significant progress with their goal. Reading texts aloud and completing grammar and punctuation exercises are necessary components of my lessons.

With my tutees who speak English as a second language, I have sessions where I converse with them to help them improve their English speaking proficiency. Oral communication actively tests the learner's understanding of the language. During these sessions, my tutees and I discuss various subjects such as current events, hobbies, interests, and how their day or week has been. I correct the tutee when they make a mistake and send the feedback via text or email.

An example of one of my lessons would be:

Goal: Finish a reading comprehension packet

Steps:
1. Take turns reading the text aloud

2. Utilize a note taking system for identifying important information (names, places, dates)

3. Read each question and refer back to the parts of the text where the answers can be found

4. Fill in answers before checking the completed questions a last time to ensure accuracy
