My teaching methodology varies a lot from subject to subject, and also from student to student. In an online one-to-one forum, student's learn in many different ways and have different goals. Sometimes, the sessions can be tightly structured and feel more like an interactive lecture, whereas at other times the sessions can involve freewheeling conversation. When it comes to content and concepts, I find that the more adaptable the methodology, the better suited the sessions will be to further understanding and increase knowledge retention. For students needing help with specific exams, my sessions can also help you to understand the importance of what the examiners are looking for: such as buzzwords, accurate and relevant examples, and essay structure. Sticking to the syllabus is crucial.
History is often simply about understanding chronology and being able to assess periods of continuity and discontinuty, however it is also about fantastic and horrific people and the moments in time that changed everything, which complicate questions of cause and effect. Politics is often conceptually difficult. It is important to appreciate both sides of an argument, whether the topic be ideology, economy, geopolitics, or biopolitics. English literature involves a close reading of texts, and understanding of context, and, in the case of poetry, a sound grasp of form and meter. English language often becomes easier and easier the more you read, but there are techniques that solve for issues of grammar, sentence structure, and spellings. Philosophy... well, Philosophy's a tricky one, we might have to figure it out together...
