About Alexandra
I've worked in the industry for long enough to know all the ropes, know who is who, and have connections that matter. I learned how to view the world like at artist under the tutelage of some amazing professors at Iowa who really focused on teaching the classics of French Academia from the 1800s, before the Modern Art movement decided that art is whatever you want it to be. I respect that tradition, but it's not mine. Art comes from work. Art comes from observation. Art comes from discipline and learning.
After graduating—I actually minored in art, my undergrad was in anthropology and history—I went on work as a researcher at Yale, a book designer at ISU, a restorer at a crumbling old victorian mansion in the middle of nowhere. In that time I didn't practice art, instead I met people of all walks of life and really learned and engaged in seeing the common threads that bring us all together. I started seeing the narratives and stories that link us together as people.
So I quit everything, left that world behind, and cut myself off from it all to focus on my art and learning storytelling. I spent eight hour days drawing from masters, learning the how and why, exploring the craft and figuring out what it means to be a visual storyteller. I read every book on the subject I could find and listened to every interview from illustrators, cinematographers, photographers, people who told stories through pictures. And after that crucible of about 4 months, I became who I am now.

I teach less on the technical skills—though we can absolutely get into the weeds of talking about page dimensions, brushes and filters, or how and who to submit your work to get published—and try to focus more on visual storytelling. How to pull out the most meaning from your comic and capture what you're trying to do. How to express the story in your head and heart that you want to get out on the page. How to make the kind of comic you want to read.
