About Jonathan
I have been teaching and tutoring Mathematics since 1991. I have taught or tutored over a thousand students at all levels - students in graduate school courses (in math and in other subjects), students struggling to complete required courses at the university or college level, and people trying to learn very basic math as they moved towards their GEDs. As a professor, I consistently achieved high student evaluations while maintaining high expectations for my students. I taught college-level mathematics to 3-5th graders in Philadelphia and tutored inmates in a prison in order for them to progress on the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education).
I have helped a student move from 2nd grade-level math to 9th grade-level in 14 months. I have helped student achieve graduate degrees, undergraduate degrees, and GEDs. More importantly, I have helped them learn how to learn mathematics themselves.

As an individual tutor, I craft each lesson to meet the student's individual learning needs. I vary my methods early in the tutoring relationship until I find the one (or ones) that work best for the student in question.
However, as a general approach, I tend to view the process as a coach rather than an instructor. If I just broadcast knowledge in the student's direction, they may or may not catch it. If, instead, I help them discover the reasons behind the rules and methods - why they're true and why they work - then the student doesn't have to memorize seemingly arbitrary bits of technique but can instead view the material as a cohesive whole.
I will only work with students and clients of age 18 or older. I prefer to tutor in coffeehouses, restaurants, and public places.
