About Cassandra
I am a certified k-9 elementary teacher as well as certified as a reading teacher for k-12. I have a bachelor's degree in elementary education, a master's in reading education, a master's in curriculum & instruction as well as educational technology. It was important for me to continue my education in order to be more effective as a teacher to my students. I've taught for 24 years and recently retired in December 2023. Teaching has always been a passion as I've wanted to make a difference in students' lives. I understand the struggles that students face with reading, and it has always been my goal to motivate my students to want to learn. The growth and success that I've witnessed with past students has proven how successful I have been with students.

As a reading teacher, it is important to first make connections with my students. A typical lesson for a 3rd grader would consist of asking the student if they know how to find the meaning of an unknown word in their text. I would go on to teach how to use context clues, using the surrounding words as clues as well as bring up prior knowledge about the topic. Kids have more background knowledge than we give them credit for; this will help them in finding the meaning of not only the word they may not have known, but also to comprehend the meaning of the sentence or paragraph being read.
