About Mel

I am a recent Equine Sport Science graduate who received the Incorporated Society of Valuers and Auctioneers East Midlands Branch Trophy for graduating at the top of my class. I am passionate about science and research - my dissertation was selected by NTU’s internal committee as one of two dissertations to be submitted for the British Society of Animal Science's Animal Science Undergraduate Thesis of the Year Award, which was a huge honour.
I assisted many of my friends and other students throughout my A Levels and degree by hosting study sessions, checking their assignments and essays, and running exam practise.
Now I have graduated, I am looking to continue to help students to achieve the grades they want and deserve.

About the lesson

One size doesn’t fit all - so I take a variety of approaches depending upon the learning style of the student and the topic we are focussing on at the time. However as biology is primarily an exam-based assessment, I ensure the student has a foundation of understanding the material before focussing on active recall and exam technique, which are an important skills essential for success in exams.
A typical lesson would involve a brief informal discussion about the topic to gauge what the student already knows, and if they would like to focus on anything in particular. We would work through the topic, and then check understanding by having the student take the lead to talk through the topic. Then we would do some memory recall work, such as quick fire question rounds, bullet pointing long exam answers, fill-the-gaps and crosswords, as just some examples. Sometimes I ask the student to come up with a few questions themselves on elements they identified as gaps in their knowledge, which I bank and then ask them in later sessions; this type of recall at later dates helps to solidify knowledge in the long term rather than short term memory. As the exams are written, I am also happy to receive submissions of past paper questions to mark between sessions and give feedback on at our session - this is key, as many students are confident to discuss an answer verbally, but find it can be difficult to write this down, especially in timed conditions. Exam prep and technique are two areas I would begin to incorporate slowly into sessions once I have gotten to know the student and their learning style.
I try to support the teaching they are receiving through school, but I am also happy to teach ahead or independently of this if the student would prefer; for this, I take a slightly different route, but maintain a focus of core understanding and active recall.
