About Brittany
I am a Southern California native who spent most of my time near the beaches in Orange County and in the mountains of the beautiful Mojave Desert.
As a high school student, I was not sure what I wanted to study in college. Attending Community College helped me discover my interest in Chemistry and Math.
After obtaining my Bachelor's in Chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara, I worked as a laboratory technician at an industrial oil analysis lab in Hawthorne, CA. Working in an underserved community in Los Angeles led me to becoming involved in community services that provided support for underprivileged children. This, in turn, led me to reflect on my values and think of ways I could combine these values with my education to serve my community.
I decided to return to school to obtain my doctorate and become a professor, which would put me in a position to mentor and uplift students the way many of my professors had uplifted me during my academic journey.
I recently obtained my PhD in Theoretical Chemistry and completed my first academic year of teaching General Chemistry. It has been a rewarding, emotional, invigorating experience, and I have met so many great students that have inspired me. I look forward to many more fulfilling academic years as a chemistry instructor.

I approach teaching with patience and with the understanding that not all students have access to the same resources and tools for success.
My lectures aim to make the material more digestible and relatable by drawing connections between the concepts and students' everyday lives. I provide lecture note packets with images, brief text, and practice problems to help students stay engaged with the lecture material and improve retention.
To help boost critical thinking skills and mitigate test-taking anxiety, my lectures incorporate low-stakes assessments (e.g., survey questions, partner problems). Similar to how having multiple "lives" in a video game takes some of the anxiety out of playing, my teaching style promotes a low-risk environment where students can feel comfortable tackling chemistry problems without the fear of making a mistake. Mistakes always lead to valuable discussions.
My lessons are for science and non-science majors at the undergraduate level.
