As a recent high school graduate having excelled in my academic career thus far, I tutor pre-algebra, algebra 1&2, as well as geometry. However, my overall compatibility with tutoring lies not only in my mathematic abilities, but also in my interpersonal skills and ability to foster conceptual understanding instead of solely memorization.
In my practice, conceptual understanding means highlighting relationships between the mathematical ideas presented, in addition to how those relationships connect to a student’s perspective and experiences. My goal in teaching is to bridge the gap between the student’s point of view and the mathematical relationships at hand by contextualizing the problems given within their personal world.
Through the encouragement of individual connection making, and an understanding of math as an interconnected system, I hope to foster a thinking foundation in students that allows them to recognize connections and relationships across disciplines, especially as it relates to mathematics.
I view myself as an excellent fit for elementary and middle school students, as I focus on guiding students’ confidence in their ability to utilize their past knowledge as well as the information given to come to meaningful conclusions. I find value in directing a student to an answer they find themselves, rather than supplying an answer and working backward–as every student is capable given the right tools and direction.
