About Jay
My name is Jay, I am a qualified teacher of science and a Biochemistry graduate of Lancaster university.
I have always learned through teaching, finding that the best way to know a subject inside and out is through having taught that. However when teaching I aim to position myself in the mindset of my students, understanding and empathising where they might struggle, and work with that to avoid frustration.
Learning should be an experience of understanding the world around us and as a result I try to contextualise all of my lessons, showing industries, natural occurrences, and where certain scientific principles will be important, not just in the workplace, but in life as a whole. I find that also allows memorisation of basic concepts, as students are able to fall back on the examples I provide.

In a lesson, I will seek to make whatever topic my students are struggling with easy, be that by approaching it from a different angle, or using practical demonstrations and real world examples to contextualise and clarify what is happening.
I will work to exam specifications teaching key words and what examiners may ask. With this I am willing to work through exam questions students have completed in their own time, and provide example questions to assist with students learning in their own time, which I can then reflect on later to ensure that my students are confident whenever they are asked about a topic.
I have tutored in the past as a volunteer and through my training as a teacher, thus am aware of the pitfalls students will face, how to address them and create consistently positive outcomes.
