About Kirsten

I’m a fully qualified Maths teacher with a degree in Mathematics and a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics. I have over 15 years of teaching and tutoring experience, and I’m currently the Head of A-Level Maths at a large secondary school with a sixth form college.

As a current examiner for both Edexcel and AQA, I know exactly what exam boards are looking for — and how to help students meet (and exceed) those expectations.

I specialise in helping ambitious students aim for grades 8–9 at GCSE and A/A* at A-Level .I’m passionate about helping girls gain confidence and thrive in Maths. Many of my students have gone on to achieve highly and pursue STEM subjects post-16.

I make even the most challenging topics feel manageable, by breaking down concepts into simple, relatable steps. Combined with my strong academic credentials and a deep commitment to student success, I am well-positioned to help learners achieve outstanding results

My online sessions are interactive, personalised, and highly effective. Students can learn from the comfort of home — all they need is a laptop or tablet (ideally with a camera).

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My passion for Mathematics began in school — I was fascinated by how logical, precise, and beautifully structured the subject is. That passion grew during my Mathematics degree and led me to complete a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics. As for tutoring, I started over 15 years ago, initially helping a few students outside of school hours. I quickly realised how powerful one-to-one support can be in building confidence and accelerating progress. Since then, tutoring has become a core part of my professional life.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialise exclusively in GCSE and A-Level Mathematics. I particularly enjoy topics that many students find intimidating because I love showing them that, with the right approach, even the most challenging concepts can become manageable.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I had a brilliant Maths teacher in sixth form who not only explained things clearly but always believed in my ability — even when I doubted myself. She inspired me to see Maths not just as a subject, but as a set of skills that could open doors. I aim to be that same kind of positive influence for my students today, especially for girls who may lack confidence in STEM subjects.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs to be more than just knowledgeable — they must be patient, approachable, and adaptable. The ability to break complex ideas down into simple steps, to listen carefully, and to respond to each student’s unique learning style is essential. Consistency, empathy, and strong communication also go a long way in building trust and helping students achieve their best.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I once taught a very bright Year 11 student who was convinced she “just wasn’t a Maths person.” She was hardworking but constantly second-guessed herself. Over a few months of tutoring, we focused on mastering exam technique and building confidence through small wins. She ended up scoring a Grade 9 in her GCSE and later took Maths and Further Maths at A-Level. Today, she’s studying Engineering at university. It reminded me that belief in one’s abilities can be just as important as raw skill.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

One of the biggest challenges in Maths — both for students and educators — is overcoming the mindset that “I’m just not good at Maths.” Many students come to me with anxiety and low confidence, especially if they’ve struggled in the classroom. My role is not just to teach content, but to rebuild their relationship with the subject. Online tutoring has made this more accessible than ever, but keeping sessions interactive and engaging is always a top priority.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I’m deeply passionate about empowering students to achieve top grades, with a specific focus of getting girls into Maths; helping them to gain confidence and pursue STEM pathways. Maths is such a powerful subject, and I love being part of that journey when a student realises they are capable of excelling. I’m also passionate about exam technique — showing students how to turn knowledge into marks under pressure is a game-changer, especially at GCSE and A-Level.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

My deep subject expertise, years of real-world teaching experience, and examiner insight. I know exactly what examiners are looking for, and I tailor every session to help students reach — and exceed — their potential. I make the complex feel simple, and the daunting feel achievable. Most importantly, I genuinely care about every student's success and confidence in Maths.
