About Mira

I am a graduate of Yale University (BA) and King's College London (MA and PhD), and I have a passion for learning and education. I have been tutoring in the US and UK since 2013.

I aim to help students achieve their academic goals, big and small. I am an experienced editor and proof-reader, and work to help students make sure their ideas come through clearly in their essays and assignments.

My main specialisms are anything in the social sciences (eg. history & politics), but I have also worked with students in geography, religious studies, visual arts, archaeology, English literature, economics, sociology, and more. I have successfully worked with students on assignments including coursework, research essays, and dissertations from A-level/IB to PhD level.

I primarily work with A-level and university students (including postgraduates) on written assignments. I can help students figure out how to answer a question, structure an assignment, plan research, organise notes and ideas, and proofread and edit drafts.

For dissertations/theses: I can help you plan dissertation topics, create a writing and research plan, and edit & proofread drafts. I have experience working on secondary school coursework, undergraduate dissertations, MA-level essays and dissertations, and PhD dissertations.

Find out more about Mira

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have been interested in politics, history, and international relations (and related subjects) nearly as long as I can remember! It was therefore my focus throughout secondary school, my undergraduate studies, and my MA and PhD work as well.

I have also been interested in tutoring for many years, first as a volunteer and then professionally once I began my undergraduate studies. I really love helping others find ways to be confident and even excited about their studies.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I tutor mainly in politics/history/international relations/sociology/geography, that group of subjects generally called the “social sciences.”

I focus on these subjects for two reasons. I appreciate that these subjects are about understanding “why” and “how” and often help us understand the world we live in. I also enjoy teaching and supporting people in developing skills like: reading difficult texts, taking notes, planning essays, research skills, and writing essays. Including dissertations!

I also offer support in writing applications: for university (US and UK mainly), for jobs, for fellowships, and more.

I do offer some tutoring for English literature, mainly for gscse, A-level, and IB English Literature. I prefer working with students on analysing poetry and some books, depending on my level of familiarity with them.

I am in awe of anyone good at math - definitely not something I could ever tutor!
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have been lucky enough to have some amazing teachers over the years. I definitely try to model my teaching to encourage each student individually to achieve their specific goals.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think tutors need to be willing to come into a tutoring relationship with an open mind, ready to ask questions to understand the particular student, their needs, and their goals.

I think tutors also need to clearly communicate not just what they recommend students do, but also explain why we are making this recommendation. This is especially true when I work with undergraduate students, because there are a lot of confusing and unspoken rules about academic success at university that I want to support students to figure out.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I’ve worked with some amazing students over the years (see Evaluations & Recommendations).
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

There’s always more reading to do! For any essay or assignment, the toughest call is often figuring out when you’ve researched enough to start writing.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching is definitely one of my biggest and longest-lasting passions!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Hopefully, these answers at least help!
