About Ian
I am a professional illustrator with five years experience designing and creating artwork for the themed attraction industry and even longer as a freelancer working on private commissions such as book covers, portraits, and greetings cards.
I have been giving informal lessons to a small number of budding artists through 2019, but am now taking on more students and offering a more focused approach to helping them reach their art goals.

I aim to teach anyone from GCSE age upwards who loves making art but feels they may be lacking certain knowledge or skills that would take the realism or execution of their art to the next level.
During art lessons at school, I remember being told to document WHY we were creating something, what it meant to us, and how it related to some art movement or idea. All very good, but there was a distinct lack of instruction in how to actually draw and paint well - something I intend to remedy for anyone who experienced or is experiencing the same.
I work to find the what common pitfalls a student might be falling into with their art, or where there is a gap in their understanding of how to depict that slice of the world they are trying to recreate on paper or canvas, and structure lessons around learning the fundamentals that would help patch that gap, bringing their artwork to another level. I do this through relaxed and friendly instruction, (I believe art should always be fun if it can) using my own examples and external resources - setting advised exercises as optional homework.
