About Paulo
I’m a professional painter and art instructor with a BFA from the University of Hartford, where I studied with artists including Stephen Brown and Nelson Shanks. I believe learning to paint is not about simply copying what the teacher does. It is about learning how to see. Many of my students come to me because they love art but don’t know where to begin, or because they have been painting for some time and feel stuck. We identify what is holding you back and work on the skills that will make the biggest difference in your work. Depending on your goals, we can work on drawing, proportion, composition, values, color mixing, light, paint handling, edges and creating a stronger sense of form and atmosphere. I teach oils and acrylics and work with complete beginners as well as intermediate and advanced students. You can work from one of my guided projects or bring your own painting and receive individual instruction as you develop it. My goal is not to make you paint like me. It is to give you the knowledge and confidence to develop your own work. I especially enjoy working with students who say, “I’ve always wanted to paint, but I don’t think I’m talented enough.” You don’t need previous experience. These are skills that can be learned. I also work with motivated teens who want to strengthen their drawing and painting skills or develop work for an art portfolio.

Every student is different, so I don’t teach everyone with the same formula. During our first lesson, we’ll talk about your experience, look at your work if you have any, and discuss what you would like to accomplish. From there, I’ll help you identify the areas that will make the biggest difference in your painting or drawing. Lessons combine demonstration with hands-on practice. Rather than simply watching me paint, you’ll work on your own artwork while I guide you through the process and explain not only what to do, but why it works. Depending on your goals, we may work on: • Drawing and proportion • Composition • Values and creating convincing light • Color theory and color mixing • Warm and cool color relationships • Underpainting and blocking in • Modeling form • Edges and brushwork • Oil or acrylic painting techniques • Taking a painting from the initial idea to completion Beginners are welcome. If you’ve never painted before, we’ll start with the fundamentals and build from there. More experienced artists can bring paintings they are currently working on. We’ll identify problems together and work toward practical solutions. Adults and motivated teens are welcome, from complete beginners to experienced painters wanting to take their work further.

Paulo is amazing artist and teacher. So gifted in his skill and just as amazing teaching. I started my first ever art class August 2022 and have never painted or anything before. Within a few lessons I’m painting things I only could dream about. Classes are so individual based and targeted you as an individual. I am amazed and have gained so much confidence in this class. I never knew I had the ability to draw and paint. Now I am doing more and more beautiful things and I can’t be more thankful
