About Shen

Hi, I'm Shen! I'm a medical student at Western Sydney University currently and a graduate of Sydney Technical High School. I finished my HSC with an ATAR of 99.25 and came 1st in Extension 2 at my school, but honestly the part I love most isn't my own results. It's that moment when something finally clicks for someone else.

I started tutoring over three years ago, mostly at Dr. Du Education where I've worked with more than 300 students across most high school year levels. Watching a student go from dreading math to actually feeling on top of it is easily the best part of my week.

I'm patient, calm, and I love explaining the why behind every method instead of just drilling steps. I really don't believe anyone is "bad at math." Usually it's just been taught in a way that never quite clicked for them, and my whole job is to find the way that does.

When I'm not tutoring I'm busy with my medical studies, which keeps me sharp on exactly the kind of focus and exam technique that helps my students in their own assessments.

About the lesson

Hi, I'm Shen — a medical student at Western Sydney University and a math tutor for Years 7–12, NSW curriculum, from foundational high-school math through to HSC Standard, Advanced and Extension 1. Always one-on-one.

How a lesson runs
We start with the student's homework and any questions from school, then move into new content: I explain the concept clearly, we work through examples together, and the student tackles questions ordered from easy to hard. Each session ends with targeted homework and they can message me anytime they're stuck.

Tailored to each student
Nothing is one-size-fits-all. We can accelerate ahead of school so content's already familiar in class, move in step to consolidate, or go back and rebuild earlier gaps. When exams come up, we switch to past papers and exam technique.

My background
ATAR 99.25, with 96 in both Extension 1 and Extension 2 Math & 1st in Extension 2 (school Dux). 3+ years teaching, mainly at Dr. Du Education, with 300+ students. I know the NSW syllabus inside out.

Where & how
In person around Hurstville, or online via Zoom anywhere in NSW — same program either way.

Rates
$60/hr (Yr 7–8), $70/hr (Yr 9–10), $80/hr (Yr 11–12). The first lesson is completely free, a full session, not a demo. No pressure, no obligation.

I don't believe any student is "bad at math", only that it's often taught in a way that never quite clicks. My job is to change that.

Your first lesson is completely free! It's a full session rather than a demo, so you can see exactly how I teach before deciding anything. No pressure and no obligation.

My rates depend on year level, and every lesson is one on one:

Years 7 and 8: $60 per hour (1 hour lessons)
Years 9 and 10: $70 per hour (1.5 hour lessons)
Years 11 and 12: $80 per hour (2 hour lessons)

Every lesson includes targeted practice questions and homework for the week, and you're always welcome to message me between lessons if you get stuck. There's no extra charge for that.

Lessons can be in person around Hurstville or online over Zoom anywhere in NSW, and the rate is the same either way. If you'd like more than one lesson a week, or some extra sessions when an assessment is coming up, just let me know and we can sort it out.
