About Orlando
I've enjoyed my studies in maths and physics and hope they will stand me in good stead as I move towards a career in engineering. Alex Bellow’s Adventures in Numberland revealed the fundamental importance of mathematics to human and animal survival. I've developed a particular interest in mechanics and pure maths and the deeper I go into theory and practice, the more confident I become in my understanding and the link between maths and engineering is ever clearer to me. I am particularly interested in the fact that most mathematical developments are based on proven fact thus creating a a building block of information to which everyone refers to, regardless to who you are. For example Isaac Newton, after publishing his work Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica could not have imagined the way in which the laws and theories described within the work would completely govern the manner to which engineers and mathematicians approach their works in the 21st century, around 300 years later.
Studying physics has given me the ability to look at both the fine details of an object and its motion, and to look at the event or object as a whole. This skill ties in well with the nature of engineering, as an engineer has to be able to view an object as a whole, whilst also focusing on the smaller details such as the correct calculation of forces and loads allow the creation of the best, most efficient design. As the failure of the Seongsu Bridge shows a small miscalculation of forces can result in the collapse of a structure. This disaster illustrated the importance of striking the right balance between efficient use of materials, whilst ensuring that the structure is stable. Through Physics I can see the link between the mathematical and practical approaches to an experiment, which is key in engineering

I truly believe in visual learning and working through examples with the student i.e. consciously taking them through a problem, explaining each step in detail before arriving at the solution. I found that the modules in which I excelled at university, the lectures would always proactively work through examples involving theory he/she was teaching at the time. I plan to take this same approach in my tutoring.
