About Yasmene
I'm a physics PhD candidate with a BS and MS in physics (from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Washington, respectively), and over 10 years of experience tutoring and teaching physics, math, and programming. I am currently working towards a PhD in physics, doing computational biophysics research. I have served as head TA and earned a teaching award for introductory physics courses.
I usually work with students on understanding particular concepts, filling in gaps in background knowledge, problem-solving skills, and test-taking strategies. I love working through challenging concepts with students of different backgrounds. In some cases we can also work to overcome mental barriers and see how powerful physics and math can be!

My job is usually involves
- listening to students to see what they are struggling with and what they already understand
- looking at course materials (such as homework and quizzes) to see what skills and concpets they need to learn
- filling in knowledge gaps (e.g. vectors, trig, algebra, calculus)
- helping students figure out problem setup and problem-solving strategies
- helping students learn how to check if their answers make sense
- giving some test-taking tips based on their course materials.
What I tutor:
(1) Physics (High School AP Physics, Honors Physics, Mechanics or Physics 1, Electricity and Magnetism or Physics 2, Waves & Optics, Thermodynamics, Modern Physics)
I am an award wining TA in the undergraduate versions of these courses, and I have tutored students with a wide variety of backgrounds and course expectations. I know taking physics courses can be stressful or discouraging. My focus is usually on understanding the strengths and gaps of the student, and on understanding what the instructor is looking for. We can work on problem-solving strategies, discuss concepts, and look for helpful videos or practice problems together.
(2) Upper Level Undergraduate & Graduate Level Physics
I have served as TA or tutor for E&M, Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, Classical Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics courses. Please contact me with specific coursework you'd like to look over (including syllabus or textbook name and authors) so that I can see if I can help!
(3) Biophysics & Physical Chemistry
I have tutored undergraduate and graduate students in these areas. Coursework in these areas can have a big variety of topics and approaches so please contact me with the specific coursework and questions you'd like to work on together.
(4) High School & Undergraduate Math
I have tutored Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus 1-3, and Differential Equations. Please contact me with specific coursework you'd like to look over so that I can see if I can help!
(5) Programming
I usually code in Python or MATLAB. I can also help with Mathematica, shell scripting, Excel/VBA, or with introductory CS coursework

Perfect! Yasmene did a lot with my son in a short amount of time. She helped him work through a tough problem and asked questions to get him thinking about the concepts vs just giving the answer. She is very knowledgeable!
- We went straight to a pretty tough problem, I think it would be worth breaking down the concepts and doing more practice on the pieces - inparticular Lenz's Law and magnetic forces on current-carrying wiresYasmene's response :

ntroduction and review of subject matter.
Yasmene did a terrific job of meeting with my daughter, speaking with her in order to understand her needs to learn her physics subject matter. Yasmene is extremely friendly and professional and took the time to listen to my daughter's concerns as to what she needed to get from her tutor sessions. Yasmeme's teaching style is excellent and explains the subject matter in a way that full understanding is quickly reached. My daughter was able to carry on with her work assignment to full completion after the lesson. We are very happy that we have found Yasmene and are looking to her next lesson.
— Paul, Dad of Grade 11 student, Physicsknowledgeable and patient and encouraging
She reviewed with my son, work that he struggled with. Listened and had him explain the process. Gave pointers on the test taking and working through difficult problems. She helped give us an understanding of where our son is at and the process for learning in these higher level classes.
— Christine, Mom of high school student taking college courses, Calculus IIYasmene is Great!
My daughter has been struggling with college Quantum Physics and is really getting a lot out of her sessions with Yasmene! They work out problems together and my daughter is able to then transfer skills she learned to work on her own.
— Debbie, Mom of undergraduate physics major, Quantum MechanicsHelped my kid to understand not just complete hw
Yasmene did not just explain my high school junior the material to prep for the physics test, she made sure the student can solve the problem on her own, which made a tremendous difference. With her calm and confident attitude she reduced my daughter’s anxiety and made sure she understands the material. Thanks so much ! Good job Yasmene.
— Ella, Mom of Grade 11 student, PhysicsWonderful physics tutor!
Yasmene is the sweetest! Very smart and does a great job breaking down some really difficult concepts into simple terms. She got me through a very fast paced 5 week physics 2 course and was patient, funny, and great at helping me tackle conceptual and mathematical problems to help me keep up. She will make you feel a lot more confident with your physics knowledge even after 1 lesson!
