About Sarani

Hello there!

My name is Sarani and I am from the beautiful island of Sri Lanka, but I currently reside in Brisbane. I have recently completed my postgraduate degree in Chemistry and I'm keen to pursue a career as a researcher. Even though my professional goal is focused on research, tutoring has always been a source of satisfaction for me in my spare time.

During my undergraduate years, I had the excellent experience of working as a part-time Science tutor. This opportunity not only caught my interest in tutoring but also allowed me to inspire students towards self-guided learning, building in them a sense of independence and personal academic growth.

I am absolutely excited about having the opportunity of stepping into tutoring again!

About the lesson

I first started tutoring during my undergraduate studies and worked part-time as a Science tutor for students in grades 6-12. Following my graduation, I also gained experience as a graduate teaching assistant for a period of 12 months. In this role, I was responsible for leading laboratory sessions for undergraduate students across a range of subjects, including Genetics and Cell Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Plant Biology and Plant Tissue Culture. Additionally, I actively participated in teaching and assessment activities, such as marking practical assignments and grading tutorials.

I particularly enjoy tutoring biology to high school students, and based on my experience, I find that dedicating 1-2 hours per session is highly effective. As a tutor, my primary focus is to foster student motivation and encourage them to become independent learners. I employ tutoring techniques that aim to develop critical thinking skills and build confidence in students' ability to learn. For example, I believe in creating interactive tutoring sessions where I pose questions and encourage students to do most of the explaining. This approach facilitates important discussions between me and the student while promoting different perspectives. It also helps me identify specific areas where the student may be struggling, allowing for targeted improvements. Another technique is setting clear learning goals for each tutoring session which enables students to understand what they should achieve by the end of the session. To facilitate this, I encourage students to provide a summary of the topics covered at the end of each session. This feedback allows me to assess their comprehension and decide whether they are prepared to move on to a new topic or if further assistant is necessary. Additionally, I have discovered that incorporating diagrams and drawings into the teaching process greatly enhances students' understanding, particularly for those who are visual learners. This method proves to be highly effective in supporting their learning journey.
