About Maeve
Just an all-round chemistry nerd who loves to get stuck into tricky concepts and problems, I am lucky to have seen many students through GCSEs and right up to the end of their A levels. I know first-hand how frustrating the subject can be, so my aim is to build your confidence with patience and care. After years of practice I also have a few tricks to share which will hopefully make it seem a little less intimidating! My qualifications include two Master's degrees in pure Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry from the University of York and Imperial College London, a PhD in Computational Chemistry from Imperial, and a PGCE from Goldsmiths in Secondary Science Teaching. Experience includes many long-term private tutoring clients privately and then from Tutorfair, (now SuperProf) since 2016, undergraduate lab delivery in Physical chemistry and Theoretical chemistry at Imperial College during 2018-2020, and four years as a full-time London Secondary school science teacher and head of KS4 Science (2021-present).

With 10+ years of experience as a private tutor, I know it’s not a one size fits all. After an informal chat about your concerns and goals I am happy to organise our practice around whatever you need, be it building confidence with written exam answers or calculations or just going in depth on a new or tricky concept together. I typically offer 1 hour weekly sessions to begin with but can be available for longer or more regularly if needed, for example during holiday periods or in the lead up to exam series. I work best with GCSE and A level students (or international equivalents) as I have been teaching these syllabi since they came out. But I would also be able to help any undergraduate student seeking a confidence boost in physical chemistry topics. Feel free to reach out if you’re interested in learning with me!

Maeve is a very able, experienced and caring teacher. She makes learning fun.
Maeve is a highly astute, friendly, and intelligent PhD scientist and teacher. Much more approachable than most scientists I've come across! Very good tutor, would highly recommend. 5 stars!
My daughter struggled with Maths until Maeve became her Tutor. It speaks for itself that she achieved an A* in GCSE Maths. Maeve is flexible in her approach and patient, building confidence with knowledge.
I supervised Maeve Kavanagh during her Masters in Green Chemistry at Imperial College. She showed herself to be an engaged and hard-working student with a genuine interest in her Masters project, the subject matter of which was highly multi-disciplinary. Maeve is a motivated student, who is able to collate, analyse and present information in a clear and precise manner. Moreover she is conscientious and pays close attention to detail. Overall I was really impressed with both the output and quality of Maeve’s work over the course of the year.
Maeve manages her time very efficiently and was always well organised and prepared for our meetings. She is able to quickly grasp new techniques, and when confronted with a problem, is able to think creatively and commit the hours needed to solve it.
Maeve was happy to take my direction but also had the initiative to work well independently which demonstrated her strong problem solving ability, which is inherent in the nature of her subject. She has an enthusiastic, confident, personable and easy-going manner that would lend itself well to tutoring.
During the year Maeve also volunteered as a Maths tutor in a secondary school once a week with the Schools Plus programme which she seems to have enjoyed a great deal.
Maeve has been a pleasure to work with over the last year. She will no doubt be an effective and caring tutor based on her strong work ethic and keen interest in chemistry.See more recommendations
