About David
I am a lifelong learner driven by natural curiosity and desire to self-improve. Holding a PhD (UCT), in Medical Biochemistry, together with extensive research and mentoring experience, I bring both depth and professionalism to every lesson.
I believe in maintaining a healthy balance across different areas of life, adjusting priorities as needs change. Beyond science, I have competed at a high level in martial arts, remain passionate about conservation, and enjoy travelling. These experiences keep me disciplined, grounded and open-minded as a teacher.

Hi, I’m David, a PhD Medical Biochemist (University of Cape Town) with an MSc and BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry, plus a solid quantitative foundation from my BCom and years of hands-on scientific research, data analysis and assay development.
I offer clear, structured tutoring in:
- Mathematics (high school through first-year university level)
- Statistics (introductory to intermediate, including scientific data analysis)
- Chemistry (physical, organic and general chemistry up to undergraduate level)
- Biochemistry (all levels – from high school Life Sciences through advanced undergraduate and postgraduate concepts)
About my lessons
My methodology combines scientific methods of learning with practical, experience-based advice and philosophical encouragement. I focus on building deep conceptual understanding rather than surface memorisation. Drawing on my own research, laboratory and mentoring experience, I show students *how* scientists actually think and problem-solve such as using active recall, spaced practice, worked examples, and deliberate practice tailored to the subject. I also help students align their study approach with their personal goals and values, offering encouragement that goes beyond the textbook so they develop both competence and confidence.
What makes me unique is that I bring real-world scientific experience into every lesson. I don’t only teach the content. I share practical strategies which I have used and refined over years of postgraduate study, research and teaching, so students leave with tools they can apply immediately.
I am proficient and able to teach in English (fluent) and can support students in Afrikaans (conversational).
In a typical lesson you can expect:
- A short check-in to clarify goals and any difficulties from previous work
- Clear explanations of core concepts, often using real scientific or everyday examples
- Guided practice with immediate feedback
- Practical tips on how to study the material more effectively
- A summary of key takeaways and focused homework or next-step recommendations
My lessons are aimed at high-school learners (especially Grades 10–12 preparing for Matric/IEB exams) and university students (first-year through postgraduate level) who want solid foundations or deeper mastery in Maths, Statistics, Chemistry or Biochemistry. I particularly enjoy working with students who are motivated to improve, whether they are struggling with a specific topic or aiming for distinction-level results.
Sessions can be online or in person (Cape Town northern suburbs / Stellenbosch area). The first lesson is a good opportunity for us to discuss your goals and see whether we are a good fit.
