About Jillian
Hello! I am an ESL teacher currently based in Santa Barbara, California. I started teaching ESL in 2015 after I returned from studying abroad in Spain. Since then, I have earned a master's degree in Applied Linguistics and TESOL, and have taught students from all over the world. I love teaching English to speakers of other languages because I love meeting people from other cultures and studying languages! I really enjoy boosting students' confidence in all areas (speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary). I have taught at intensive language schools, libraries, non-profit organizations, and major universities. More specifically, I specialize in teaching writing, grammar, and vocabulary. As a second language learner myself, I know how difficult, but rewarding this process is. Therefore, I approach ESL teaching with empathy and excitement for language learning. I structure my lessons carefully so that they are challenging, but attainable in order to develop a range of language skills. As a creative person, I like to design lessons that are fun and engaging, so I enjoy learning about my students' interests and backgrounds to bring them into my curriculum. I also prefer to assess students as they progress, rather than simply at the end of a course period. In my classroom, I advocate for the use of technology, especially English-to-English dictionaries and other resources that can help students become more independent. Ultimately, I am constantly reflecting on my teaching experiences and student feedback so that I can make better choices and be a better teacher to future students.
