About Tom

I am currently working as a Chemistry teacher in a leading private school in the south of England. I have extensive experience with IGCSE and A-level specifications and teach these on a daily basis. I graduated from the University of York in the summer of 2022 with First class honours with Distinction. In addition to this, I was awarded the Whinfield prize for Chemistry because I received the highest BSc result of my academic cohort. I am passionate about Spanish language, holding a Level 5 qualification. Additionally, I am passionate about improving diversity and inclusion in science and wrote my dissertation about how we can improve science education and communication to promote diversity and inclusivity. I received A*s and A in all my science A-Levels and GCSEs and I have received 1st-grade qualifications in all of my University exams and assessments. In addition to my formal teaching experience, I spent 2 years being a Chemistry and Biology mentor whilst at College so I have direct experience supporting students in their A-level studies as well as being personally aware of the challenges that these exams can bring for students.

About the lesson

Hi Everyone, I am currently an IGCSE and A-level Chemistry teacher and am passionate about supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds to thrive in Chemistry. I am aware that Chemistry A-level and even GCSE can seem daunting at points. The key here is to break down seemingly challenging problems and explore the foundational concepts upon which these are based. Ensuring that one has this understanding and grounding, allows us to problem solve more effectively, a key skill in science assessments, and start to form links between the knowledge that we hold. For A-level, the way to get a good mark is just as much about your knowledge as it is about knowing how to answer the questions in the way that the exam boards require. The use of language and terminology is critical here. This is what we will tackle, both the syllabus and exam technique to help you apply all the knowledge that you have learnt when it comes to the exam environment. We will look at exam past papers. My awareness of common misconceptions and errors that students make means that I can anticipate where you may go wrong and address this in advance. We will also look into those areas that you struggle with the most and we'll work on improving your understanding by looking at new examples and explanations to tackle these concepts in innovative ways. Whether you find chemistry daunting or whether you are looking at doing it at degree and need to get a particular grade, I can support you in getting the grade that you deserve and need for all your future plans.
