About Kyle

Last summer I completed my A level exams. As part of a cohort blighted with COVID-19 restrictions, I had to learn how to deal with the combined pressures of GCSEs, university applications, and A levels, under particularly tough circumstances. What I can offer, then, are first-hand insights into how best Year 11s and sixth-formers can prepare for some of the biggest challenges of their school-life. This means that I can give subject-specific lessons in History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies, as well as clear advice about putting together a competitive university application.

I received 10 nines at GCSE. I received two A*s and and one A at A level. I am currently reading Philosophy and Theology at the University of Oxford.

To improve at the humanities, one must learn how to write concise and lucid essays. Very often, I find, the difference between B and A* students is not whether they know the facts, but whether they can embed precise information into a cogent argument. And while I do not profess to be a master essayist, I know what GCSE and A level examiners are looking for, and how to meet the criteria stated on a given mark scheme.

More than this, I have experience working with students aged between 15 and 18. As both an Academic Scholar (English, Maths, and Science) and a Subject Scholar (Philosophy and Theology), I spent much of my sixth-form helping students in the younger years. This sort of work varied from compiling reading lists, to proof-reading essays and personal statements. Indeed, as Secretary-General, I was also responsible for my school's Model United Nations club; it was my job to organise national events, and teach students how to construct and analyse substantive arguments. Last year I even received a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (or TEFL) qualification; this involved a rigorous, two-day workshop, and has greatly informed the way I structure my lessons.

My teaching style is quite discursive. Something which can, I think, really help students is one-to-one conversations around a model answer, or even a piece of their own writing. This approach can often inspire a genuine understanding of one's subject, and is brilliant practice for university admissions interviews. Another aspect of my lessons is a laser-focus upon past paper questions; the best GCSE and A level students will learn how to reverse-engineer mark-schemes; this is a fundamental skill, which I would love to teach.
