About Sam

I'm starting a secondary History PGCE at the University of Cambridge in September. I'm really excited to start teaching and I hope that will show in my preparation for tutorials.

I love history for its characters and stories. I try to keep tutorials engaging by rooting them in the stories of those we're studying, helping students understand their lives and motivations, and building the worlds they lived in. I also try to help students do their own historical thinking wherever possible, equipping with them the skills to discern between competing narratives and spot inconsistencies.

I am also passionate about and experienced in politics and philosophy. I'm finishing a masters degree in politics, and I have an undergraduate degree in politics, philosophy and economics from Oxford University.

I've just left the civil service where I worked in the House of Lords, the Cabinet Office and the Department for Education. As a result, I understand how Westminster institutions work in practice. I hope this will keep tutorials interesting and rooted in current affairs. It also means I am organised and confident.

I start by listening to student and adapt my approach to their subject needs and their style of learning. I`ll take our sessions seriously and do my very best to help you achieve your goals.

About the lesson

For group lessons I like to encourage discussion and help students learn how to develop their own analytical skills. I try not to lecture for too long.

For one-on-one sessions I adapt my lessons to my students. I try to listen to the student and adapt my approach to their questions about the subject and style of learning. I'll take our sessions seriously and do my very best to help you achieve your goals.

Blessing

I've had the pleasure of knowing Sam for almost a decade. We were at university together and have worked in the same industry. I have always known Sam to be very conscientious and hard-working. He is always passionate about his work and has always worked hard to nurture and encourage the people he manages. The development of other people is important to him; and actively listening to and encouraging his friends as well as his colleagues comes naturally to him. This makes me confident that he will do well as a tutor. I hope that you will look favourably on his application.

My tariffs may increase when tutoring degree-level students if I have to spend more time preparing for lessons, or if I have to travel long distances.
