About Alyx
I am a recently graduate neuroscience PhD with eight years of experience teaching laboratory classes and tutoring. My dissertation research was on the impact of exercise on neuronal metabolism.
As an educator, I aim to pull all students through to the end of the semester. I provide specific feedback on assignments and make sure to clarify any topics that students had difficulty with. While I am not there to be any of my students’ friend, I do like to make sure I am understanding of why students who are struggling are having difficulty, and I always try to accommodate students within reason. For example, I might create more in-depth class notes and encourage recordings if I have students who are unable to keep up with the pace of class lectures. I make sure to use visuals, thought experiments and fun analogies to help students grasp complicated material and I have found my approaches to be quite successful according to student feedback.
In the past, I have created audio recordings of lectures and class activities to help students with reading and visual impairments in my lab. I find one of the major shortcomings that science education has is accessibility, and although I am by no means an expert, coming up with solutions to accessibility issues in the lab has become somewhat of a side pursuit for me as a scientist.

I use a student-centered philosophy. Rules and institutions are there to make education more attainable and shouldn’t be used for gatekeeping. The goal of higher education, especially, is to impart skills and knowledge to people who want it, and to prepare students for careers that they find stimulating. For that reason, I structure my classes around existing methods, but I keep things because they work and not solely because they’ve been done that way. I encourage feedback from my students and work to adjust anything about the lessons that can feasibly be changed if I see that students are not comfortable with it. One thing that I have seen often in academia is a high level of uncertainty from students in their own ability to interpret the information, and my primary goal as a science educator is to eliminate the mental blocks that my students have in regard to reading scientific information and applying methodology.
