About Shyam

I have been a professional musician for the past 15 years, the past 6 of which have been spent in London. Originally from Kenya, I’m passionate about showcasing the music not just of my home country, but of the wider East African region. I also specialise in related styles of music such as Latin and Congolese Rumba, being fortunate enough to learn from the masters. During my career, I have worked in many aspects of the industry, mainly as a guitarist, singer, and percussionist. These include performing, teaching and lecturing, recording and producing, writing/composing/arranging, researching, and being a band leader. I have been fortunate enough to perform in some of the biggest festivals in the UK, and record in some of the best studios. My experience as a practitioner is compounded by an MA in Ethnomusicology from SOAS University of London, where I focused on the cultural complexities of development, decolonisation, and other issues facing societies in the Global South,. Now I wish to turn my attention to my new passion - helping everyone achieve their inner musician. I believe that just as everyone speaks their native language, we can all speak the language of music - one which is shared amongst all humans and enriches our experience of life. I believe in the transformative power of music education, not just for ourselves as individuals, but for our wider societies, and through this I hope we can make the world a better place.

About the lesson

I believe everyone is a musician and I am passionate about helping them realise their inner musicality! My approach to music is a holistic, language-based approach which makes learning more fun and better internalised. It has been informed by extensive research and my own experience learning, performing, and teaching in a wide variety of styles including classical, jazz, popular, and 'World Music'. Lessons include guitar and musicianship (ear training, theory, improvisation, performance, vocals, and percussion) and are 60 minutes. Qualifications and experience: 1. MA Music (SOAS University of London) 2. BMus Commercial Music Performance, Production, & Enterprise (University of Westminster) 3. 15+ years of experience as a teacher, performer, songwriter, composer/arranger, and band leader.

Trial lessons will only be online or at my address.
In person lessons cost £40/hr at my address, or £40/hr + £10 transport fee at the students address (depending on location).
Online lessons are £35/hr.
You will need your own guitar, and an A4 ruled or music staff notebook.
