About Sydney-James
I am 20 years old, and currently a student at Stellenbosch University. I am originally South African, but I spent the last 9 years of my life in Mozambique, where I had my first experience with guitar. I started playing the guitar in 2019, and have found a deep passion for the instrument. I took lessons for the first year of my playing, where I was taught the basic skills, and learned my way around the instrument. Since then, I have mainly been self-taught, using the internet to learn the concepts I incorporate into my playing. I played in a band in high school, and we did performances at school events. In this band I was the lead guitar player, the majority of what we played was cover of songs in the rock genre. I have diversified my playing since then, where now I am proficient in playing blues, and acoustic guitar.

In my lessons, I prioritise teaching students the basic and fundamental skills which underlie the music they want to learn, and I help students learn songs they like. I believe learning basic chord shapes and scales will not only give students the dexterity and skill needed to play songs, but also give them a good foundational understanding of the instrument, which will allow them to experiment with creating their own unique style of playing. I am a native English speaker, and also an advanced Portuguese speaker. My teaching methodology is aimed to get new guitar players to get comfortable, and familiarize themselves with the instrument. I aim for students to get acquainted enough so practice does not feel frustrating, and for them to have enough proficiency to feel comfortable playing without any help.
