About Thomas

In my experience as a classroom teacher, I have felt great success with encouraging my students to achieve self-expression through performance. Performing on an instrument is a truly intimate undertaking. Much like learning a language, the ability to express an idea takes great patience from the onset. I have worked with every level of performer in both large and small group settings, as well as individual lessons. I always meet students exactly "where they are" and build on their skill sets at a pace that encourages growth and expressive capacities. My students over the years have described me as passionate about music, consistent in my approach to teaching them, and positive in my ability to reinforce musical growth at any level.

About the lesson

I have played guitar since I was 10 years old, and have performed in jazz bands and combos, as a popular rock soloist, at coffee houses and open mics, and in the last five years have been teaching classical guitar in a classroom setting. I am fluent in music notation, music theory, as well as the various classical, jazz, and popular idioms with music education for the guitar, and for any instrument.

I approach guitar teaching with both visual and theoretical acumen. My students will learn theory through playing the guitar and will be able to apply that theory to their own music.

In a guitar lesson, I focus on a student's individual technique and assess/remedy/reinforce what is correct and offer guidance toward improvements. Some elements of guitar technique are absolute, whereas some leeway exists for players to develop their own technique, and I encourage both in my lessons.

I am happy to teach beginner students with no prior experience, novice students with some experience, and intermediate students who are looking for an advanced approach to the instrument.

I was very lucky to have Thomas as my high school band director! Not only is he an incredible musician with a wealth of knowledge, he is also extremely personable and finds ways to engage all of his students with any content.

I have no doubt Thomas will be able to support you on your musical journey - whether you are picking up the guitar for the first time, are an experienced player, or are looking to learn more about music theory. His love for music is truly contagious!

Tom Bourgault aka “Doc B” is a master of the craft. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable at music theory and guitar, but his way of breaking it down for students to understand and learn the fundamentals demonstrates his teaching ability and proficiency. You won’t go wrong learning with Doc B!

Tom was my high school jazz ensemble director and brought so much passion and expertise to each and every rehearsal. Not only is he great when it comes to directing a band, but his knowledge of music theory and ability on the guitar is also excellent! You would be lucky to have a guy like him as your instructor!
