About Shelicia
Hello! I’m an MD & MPH graduate and former Biology and Genetics teaching assistant. I truly enjoy helping students succeed and take pride in seeing them build confidence and understanding in challenging subjects. I create lessons that are structured, personalized, and paced to your needs. Together, we can break down complex concepts step by step, as many times as needed, until everything makes sense. I aim to create a calm, supportive, and structured environment where you can ask questions freely and make real progress without feeling overwhelmed. Whether you’re studying Biology, Genetics, Anatomy, Physiology, or Pathophysiology, my goal is to help you gain clarity, confidence, and lasting understanding, so you feel fully prepared for exams, coursework, or simply mastering the subject.

**My teaching approach** My approach as a tutor is structured, supportive, and tailored to how each student learns. As an MD & MPH graduate and former Biology and Genetics teaching assistant, I understand that many students struggle not because they lack ability, but because concepts are often presented too quickly or without enough context. I focus on building strong foundations first, then layering complexity in a clear and logical way. Rather than memorization, I emphasize understanding the why behind biological and physiological processes. One technique I use regularly is asking students to explain a concept back to me in their own words, this allows me to confirm true understanding, identify any gaps early, and reinforce learning in a way that builds confidence and long-term retention. **What a typical lesson looks like** A typical session begins with a quick check-in to identify what you’re finding most challenging and what your immediate goals are (exam preparation, coursework, or concept review). We then break the topic down into manageable sections using diagrams, simplified explanations, and real-life clinical or biological examples where appropriate. Throughout the lesson, I encourage questions and active participation, and we finish with a brief summary and targeted practice or review suggestions so you leave feeling clear, not overwhelmed. **What sets me apart** What sets me apart is not only my academic background, but my personal journey as a learner. I was once a student who needed complex concepts to be explained clearly and patiently before they truly made sense. That experience later led me to become a Biology and Genetics teaching assistant, where I further developed my ability to break down challenging material in ways that are accessible and confidence-building. Because of this, I aim to create a calm, non-judgmental learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, this is often where the biggest breakthroughs happen. My goal is to help students move from confusion to clarity, and eventually to the point where they can explain concepts back confidently in their own words. **Who my lessons are for** My lessons are ideal for: - High school and undergraduate students studying Biology or related sciences - Pre-med, nursing, allied health, and public health students - Students taking courses in Genetics, Anatomy, Physiology, or Pathophysiology - Anyone who feels overwhelmed by dense material and wants clear, structured guidance Lessons are adapted to your level, learning style, and specific course requirements! My priority is to support your learning and success by helping you build confidence, clarity, and a solid understanding of the material at a pace that works for you.
