About Elliott

I'm Elliott, an MEng Mechanical Engineering graduate from the University of Liverpool, where I averaged 80% across the degree, including a sandwich year in China studying fluid mechanics. I got there the long way round: I was in learning support from age five to ten and spent most of school being told I was behind. What changed wasn't intelligence, it was method. I worked out how to learn, and once that clicked, maths and physics went from the subjects I dreaded to the ones I was best at.

I put that to the test at university, helping six coursemates move from 55–60% to 70–75% using the same approach I use now. That's what convinced me the method transfers, and it's why I tutor.

Since graduating I've worked as a change management consultant, which is really the job of helping reluctant people change when it's in their own interest — useful preparation for a Year 10 who's decided they hate maths. I then set up and ran operations at a software company, and now build my own, including a learning platform, so how people learn is what I think about most days.

What you can expect from me: a fixed weekly slot that I keep, honest feedback on where you actually are, a clear plan for closing the gap, and a calm, patient approach. I don't do pressure; I do structure and consistency, because that's what produces grades.

About the lesson

I was in learning support from age five to ten. I went on to average 80% in a Mechanical Engineering MEng, and along the way helped six of my classmates move from 55–60% to 70–75% using the same method I'll use with you. So I don't believe in "not a maths person". I believe most students have never been taught how to learn, and the gap between them and the top of the class is technique, not talent.

The method. We split the exam into its areas and map your strengths and weaknesses honestly. Then we take each weakness in turn and work on it until it becomes a strength — understanding why the method works, not just memorising it, so it holds up when the question looks unfamiliar. Alongside that, we cover exam technique: reading the question properly, showing the working examiners reward, managing time, and staying calm under pressure. And I teach you how to revise between sessions, because what you do the other six days matters more than the hour with me.

What makes this different. Most tutoring is content plus practice. I add meta-learning — how to learn — which is the most important skill any student has and the one teachers and tutors almost never teach. The aim is two things at once: the best grade you can get in this exam, and the confidence to learn anything after it, at university, at work, wherever. Grades open doors; knowing how to learn is what gets you through them.

Lessons. 60 minutes online, one to one, shared whiteboard. Short summary and targeted practice after each session. Fixed weekly slot per student, and I don't cancel.

Who it's for. KS3 Maths (Years 7–9), GCSE Maths (Foundation and Higher, all boards), A-Level Maths, and GCSE and A-Level Physics. Especially students who've lost confidence, been told they're "behind", or are facing a resit.

Background. MEng Mechanical Engineering. I now build software for a living, including a learning platform, so most of my week is spent thinking about how people actually learn and remember. That's what comes into every lesson.
