About Holly

Hi, my name is Holly and I am a McGill graduate with a Bachelor's of Science in Honours Geology (Earth and Planetary Sciences). I have completed research projects in various topics, most notably by performing high temperature/pressure melt experiments on an enstatite chondrite meteorite in order to gain a better understanding of the evolution of Mercury's mantle. However, I intend to continue my studies in another direction by entering the health science industry. My career goals include becoming a Biology professor and researcher at the college level, all the while working on an awareness project (future organization) for gastrointestinal motility disorders.

I began tutoring independently about four years ago and started off with introductory university level courses. I have continued to work independently ever since and now work with a greater variety of students: high school math (all levels) and science (including physics and chemistry), and CEGEP or University (introductory level) Physics, Biology and Chemistry. I also have experience working for a couple tutoring companies. The first was Kumon, where I worked for a year with students aged 3+ in math and English as a second language. More recently, I began working for a company which offers both 1-on-1 and group courses in math and english to aboriginal students in an e-classroom setting.

About the lesson

I have a personalized learning approach to tutoring, where I have found through experience that students respond differently according to the method by which they learn best. This being said, I start off by asking them what their goals in getting help are, what they believe their weak points to be, as well as doing a quick assessment of any material they provide in order to see where the student stands. The latter allows me to determine the curriculum as well as the test-question style of their teachers, which is useful when preparing practice questions for the student. I try to start at a basic level of each concept in order to build their knowledge base from a place of understanding that they might have missed in class, and then by slowly increasing the difficulty, the student will gain the confidence necessary to begin working more and more independently. Having confidence in the work you do and knowledge you have is what I believe to be the greatest asset in your studies, so my approach revolves around helping the student get to a point where they will feel confident in their abilities.

Details

For the initial 0-30min lesson, the goal is to discuss the student's concerns, curriculum, and discuss a plan for future lessons - this can be done over the phone, by text, or online (e-classroom, Skype, etc.).

I will meet with the students at the library (Beaconsfield, Kirkland, Ste-Annes) rather than at their house, at least for the first few sessions.
