About Robert
I started tutoring Mathematics in 1988 and I was so thrilled how well my students did - it was down to their hard work of course, my job was to point them in the right direction.
I have worked in multiple fields applying Maths (I can confirm it is used in real life!). Knowing how Maths works in the outside world helps me teach its concepts in practical terms.
I have also worked at the University Of Cambridge in the Cambridge Assessment department which comprises OCR, Cambridge International Education (CIE) and Cambridge Assessment English.

We all know Mathematics is a very important subject - for everyday life, but also as a means to get into higher education or for many jobs. My philosophy is - to be "good" at Maths, the best way is to actually understand it rather than follow a set of instructions to solve a problem.
If you are naturally "good" at Maths, those steps will be obvious and there is no issue. For most people (myself included!), the key is to "understand" the steps in solving a Maths problem - this will help you understand Maths itself.
For example, I was taught for years that π (Pi) was 3.14159... and to solve the circumference of a circle, you use the equation 2*π*Radius. That is just an instruction – there is no understanding there to be had.
However, just by looking at a diagram of a circle, we notice the 2 * Radius part of the equation is really just the Diameter. Now, we know that the equation is Circumference = π * Diameter. Therefore, π is really just the ratio for circles between a diameter and its circumference. This is true for any circle - the Circumference is always Pi (i.e 3.14) times the Diameter. This is interesting for other shapes. For a square, the ratio is easier to calculate (e.g. for a square of diameter of 2 [the length across the square], the circumference [sum of edges] is 8. So for a square, the ratio between its circumference and its diameter is simply 8/2 = 4). π is the same idea - it is just a ratio specifically for circles (but just not a nice whole number as it is for squares!).
That is just an example – and a lot easier if I could have included diagrams here!
I will make your lessons fun and will help you develop in Maths.
