I like to explain the concept to my student and then I let them have a go at the concept in the form of a problem. I don't move on until the student is comfortable with the concept and fully understands it and has mastered it. I like to teach using diagrams and using practice problems. I have a YouTube channel where I upload my math teachings and I help tutor my own math class.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I first developed an interest in maths when I was in high school. I wasn’t that great at it and failed advanced maths in the 10th grade, but when I put in the hard work to really understand it, it suddenly became very beautiful to me. I then went from failing maths to achieving 92/100 for Maths specialists which is a rare and incredible result in that subject. I became interested in tutoring during high school because if you couldn’t explain something to someone else you don’t understand it yourself. I really enjoyed helping others that were struggling with content because understood how it felt to not understand maths. So I decided I wanted to do what I can to help those in Australia who were once in a similar position to me.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I like to teach mostly applied maths topics ranging from chemistry to advance physics. Specifically, I look at how things change compared to one another so that’s mostly calculus. However, I teach all pre-calculus because, without the maths before calculus, calculus becomes very difficult. The topics I mainly discuss with my students are algebra and basic arithmetic, however, with my more advanced students, we look at integrals as well as the applications of areas under curves.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Piers Dudin was my inspiration, he allowed me to reach my full potential in maths while at school. He showed me that maths was more than just equations and numbers, but they were physical realities of the world around us. I’ve been inspired by my dad who was my physics and chemistry teacher and helped me push my understanding and curiosity to the limit. Without these people, I wouldn’t have become the curious Mathematician I am today.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Being patience and kind makes a good tutor but what makes a great teacher are those previous qualities plus the ability to help the student teach themselves. They do this by demonstrating the idea or concept at the most elementary level and allow the student themselves to see the solution rather than be told the answer. This opens the doorways for curiosity; thus I believe the greatest teachers create better teachers then themselves. As a tutor its my job to teach a concept so that the student can teach someone else.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

My time at school wasn’t that academic at all, I was average and just got C’s really. Until 2020 after coming out of lockdown I failed year 10 maths. I was so disappointed in myself that I set myself the goal to pass. Well, I achieve that with ease but then I keep working hard and eventually topped one of the tests, Then the following one. Before I knew it I became the top of the class. Before year 11 I studied hard during the school holidays to prepare. When I came back, I become the top of physics, chemistry, math methods and specialist maths. In year 12 I started achieving results unlike anyone had previously achieved at my school. I graduated with one of the highest maths and physics results in all of Queensland. From my experience at school, anyone can learn anything if they put their mind to it and are willing to put in the work.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

I personally didn’t experience any difficulties when studying at school and still studying now. Originally when I failed maths the only difficulty, I faced was my acceptance of my result. However, once I accepted it, it made me into a better maths student and allowed me to reach my potential while at school and still at university.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is math and physics. Math is the language of reality and if you can understand it, it opens the doors to endless possibilities. I also love teaching because I know what it's like not to understand something. So if I can help other people in their journey with maths, It makes me happy because I helping them receive a better understanding of numbers and symbols. I love to make maths fun and I love to make others see it as fun rather than boring.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

What makes me a Superprof is the fact that I have the experience of being the student who struggles, because of this it allows me to help those who struggle more so than others because I know personally how embarrassing and scary it is. I can relate to my students which gives me a stronger connection. It also allows the students to become more confident because they can see how far I’ve come from being in there same position.
