About Dylan

Hi, I am a recent Graduate of Mathematics and I am currently a Student Teacher. I have some free time with which I'd like to further develop my practice. The teachers I work with have been very helpful with their feedback so far but I'd prefer if my pupils were a little more critical of me. I'm here looking to do 2 things: 1. Help you to not only do well in maths, but also to understand it. 2. Receive your critical feedback so that I can do better for you and others like you.

I am enrolled in a secondary school PGDE right now and have experience conducting lessons with classrooms of up to 29 children from S1 to S4. I am using what I'm learning on this course to influence my teaching methods. A typical lesson with me is 50 minutes long, and I'm more than happy to carry a lesson on for an additional 5-10 minutes when it seems like this will be productive. My lesson structure typically looks like: - 5-10 mins on a targeted recall activity which will draw on prior learning. The chosen recall activities will involve skills and knowledge which will be needed for the main lesson. This allows me to spot and address misconceptions prior to covering new material. - 10 mins discussing the topic we will be covering today. In this discussion I am looking to find out what the level of understanding and competency is currently. I also want to outline the intended learning for the lesson. - 10 mins of presenting the problems we are trying to solve. This is the part which varies the most. Sometimes I will be deconstructing the problems myself at first before having the pupils direct me on how to approach some other examples. Sometimes I will pose a challenge question for the pupil to have a think about and present ideas. - 10 mins of practice. I will have some problems prepared for pupils to work through on their own. These will be presented in different formats. i.e. word questions, real life context, abstract, pure algebra, picture questions, etc. - 5 mins of checking working and answers, and discussing justifications and difficulties. This part is mostly pupil-led with some conversational direction by me. I'm looking to understand what went well and where we still want to improve. - 5 mins going back over the learning intentions and success criteria so we can measure the progress that's been made. I will rarely give homework, but if I do it is often just to take 10 minutes to watch a video or interact with tools I've made on Desmos or Geogebra.
