About Reese
Completing the rigorous coursework to receive my B.S. in Interdisciplinary Mathematics from the H.L. Wilkes Honors College at FAU taught me a lot about learning and motivation. As it's commonly taught, mathematics pedagogy can be very discouraging, especially for young students. Consciously or not, teachers and the mystical way popular culture treats math often incentivize students to feel "smart" when they get a correct answer, and unintelligent when they do not. Not only does this result in anxiety and self-judgment for struggling students, but the students who learn quickly are taught that the joy of math is in finding the "right" answer. This can make life very difficult for early achievers as the math becomes more complicated and prone to mistakes. I plan my tutoring with this dynamic in mind, and aim to provide the student with lessons that focus on the process rather than the outcome. I would like my students to feel as though they are learning math not to validate their intelligence or to get a good grade, like I once did, but like they are gaining a new analytical tool for understanding their lives: an incomprehensible mathematical concept becomes a powerful way to interpret this often incomprehensible world. Students will practice attacking math problems critically, rather than by memorization, building understanding and confidence.

Lessons available to students who would like help with Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, Physics, or Calculus, at a middle, high school, or college level. I employ a variety of evidence-based techniques as well as my own experience in learning as well as teaching to identify each student's needs, strengths, and weaknesses. Lessons mostly involve working together on my own practice problems, which I will tailor to the student, but I am also happy to help students complete whatever assignments they are struggling with. We will generally break each concept that a student is learning into smaller ideas, and then build confidence by focusing on the understanding and intuition behind those ideas.
