About Jay
Note: I will be on vacation from July 1st through July 21st, afterwards I will be back for tutoring! I apologize for any delays in getting back during this time period.
I'm a Math teacher and Math tutor serving the Bay Area both in person and online. I grew up in Alameda, which is where I started tutoring at both my High School and the Mathnasium of Alameda. Until I started tutoring, I had a very negative perception of both Math and my ability to properly do it. When my teacher asked for help with tutoring her Algebra I class, I only signed on because it was a course that I'd already taken. But I soon discovered that my previous struggles with math gave me a lot of key insight into the areas where students were struggling. Tutoring with Mathnasium taught me a systematic and progressive approach to learning Math that heavily inspired my current approach. To this day I still aspire to keep that intuitive and systematic approach to my instruction and learning materials while still meeting students wherever they are in their math journey. I went to UC Berkeley as a Philosophy major, and also took every Math class up to Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Discrete Math. Some students find it hard to believe, but the higher up you go in Math the more interesting it gets! In my spare time, I love learning about anything I can get my hands on, and I also enjoy reading alongside catching up on TV and my favorite games. I also enjoy running and weightlifting, and I am an active member of my local Buddhist temple.

I'm a Math teacher and a recent graduate of UC Berkeley that teaches Math from Kindergarten to Calculus. While homework tutoring is part of my practice, I believe a successful tutoring session always starts with shared goals and getting to know every student and their needs. For me, tutoring isn't just about getting help with homework; it's a space for students to learn important study and focus skills, as well as to develop confidence in themselves and their ability to learn Math. Learning the Math is important, but so is learning "how" to learn!
During a typical first session we'll spend up to thirty minutes getting to know each other so I can learn about you and your experience with Math, and afterwards we'll work on a couple of problems from your coursework so I can get a feel for how you go about solving problems. We'll also figure out if there are gaps in your Math knowledge that are getting in the way of your work.
From there we'll find a format for future sessions that helps you the best, but an example would be 5 minutes of checking in and working on / changing our goals, 15-25 minutes of working on a skill that needs improvement, and 30-40 minutes with homework, classwork, or test prep. I try to always end sessions with resources students can use outside of tutoring to help them, and if it's helpful I send practice exercises to do before we meet again.
A common experience for students is feeling that they've mastered the lesson but still struggle with difficult problems that appear in their homework and tests. I remedy this through giving progressively more difficult Math questions until the student is ready for almost any problem that could be thrown their way. This contributes both to learning the topic at hand as well as helping the brain solve other types of math problems more easily.
During my sessions, growth mindset is king: no one is inherently "bad at Math", we just need the proper support and motivation to get good at it! With time and energy put in the right direction, you'll find that you can both survive and thrive in learning Math and everywhere else in life! Pedagogy (the science of learning) is a strong passion of mine, so I hope to learn as much from working with you as you learn working with me!

Perfect! We had the pleasure of working with Jay for a full year, and I can’t recommend him highly enough.
He tutored our daughter in middle-grade math and played a key role in helping her build confidence and improve her skills. Jay was always patient, attentive, and encouraging. He took the time to understand her learning style and made sure she felt supported every step of the way. They developed a great rapport, and she genuinely looked forward to their sessions. Jay’s dedication and positive approach made a real difference in her academic journey.See more reviews

Jay is an excellent tutor because he listens and makes me feel confident and comfortable. He teaches in many ways to help me understand. The language he uses helps me comprehend what I am struggling in. I don’t ever feel pressured during our sessions. Highly recommend Jay to get through your math class!
I would recommend Jay because he is very flexible if you end up needing to change the date of the meeting. I would also recommend him because he is very good at explaining the problems or questions you have for him. I have only had him for one semester but he has helped me greatly.
