About Lena
Though I first moved to Houston while on a trajectory towards a career in academic research, after completing school, I developed a passion for helping students understand math and chemistry.
As an undergraduate student, I attended Arcadia University, in the greater Philadelphia area. At Arcadia, I was a chemistry major with minors in mathematics and computer science. After graduating, I moved to Houston to complete my master's degree in chemistry at Rice University. I've now lived in Houston ten years, and am a big fan of the city!
While in school, I had the good fortune to work on several computational chemistry research projects, and was able to publish three articles in the Journal of Chemical Physics. I now work full-time as a tutor, and am forever finding new ways to communicate the same concepts to different students, who are all starting from their own unique backgrounds.

I love the one-on-one aspect of tutoring, which usually allows students to feel comfortable enough to ask important questions that they may keep to themselves during class. My goal is always to help students build confidence and the ability to learn independently.
When meeting with students online, I'm able to share my screen to display a whiteboard where I record our notes and work. At the end of the session, I save this as a PDF and email it to the student. Things always move a little quicker if students share PDFs or photos of questions they want to discuss in advance.
When meeting with students in-person, I like to bring a whiteboard with me, to ensure students have the chance for hands-on or visual learning.
