About Eden
I just finished my Engineering Master's at Edinburgh and I'm heading into a graduate career in electrical systems and renewables, but tutoring isn't just something I fit around that. I've done it for two years and it's genuinely one of the parts of my week I look forward to most, especially the moment something finally clicks for a student who's been stuck.
Back in school I landed in the top 0.4% nationally in the UK Mathematics Trust Challenge, which is less about knowing formulae and more about thinking your way round something you haven't seen before. That's a mindset I try to bring into tutoring.
The vast majority of my students go on to get A's, and that's what keeps it rewarding: seeing the result of the work actually pay off.

Before the tutoring starts, I am always open to having a quick chat with the parents: which topics are causing the trouble, how the student prefers to work, anything a school report might not capture.
With the student, I don't follow a set syllabus from lesson one. I work through a few problems together first to see where their understanding of the theory actually breaks down, rather than treating the surface topic as the problem. Two years of doing this has taught me there's no single way to explain something. One student needs it drawn out, another needs to talk through the logic out loud, another just needs to see it done a few different ways before it clicks. So I adjust as I go rather than sticking to one method.
I'd rather a student ask too many questions than sit quietly stuck. Even the same thing asked three different ways usually means we're close to the actual gap, not that they're behind.
Sessions are usually an hour, but I'm flexible. Some students do better with 45 minutes and full focus, others want 90 near exam time. I tutor National 5 through to Advanced Higher, both online and in person around Edinburgh. I've achieved straight A's including Advanced Higher Maths, Mechanics and Physics, and I just finished my Engineering Master's, so no subjects were something I studied once and forgot.
