About Jonathan

Recent history graduate from the University of St Andrews with a passion for history in all its forms. Whilst at university, I studied topics from across the principal historical epochs (ancient, medieval and modern) with modules ranging from the Crusades of the 12th and 13th centuries to the Japanese Empire of the 20th century. In my final year of senior school I studied Nazi Germany, whilst taking a course in classical history and mythology on the side. Whilst new to tutoring as a profession, I have spent many an hour tutoring my two younger brothers with their historical studies, and consider myself to be in possession of a solid and comprehensive general knowledge of a wide range of topics from the last two thousand years of human history.

About the lesson

Lessons are entirely tailored to the needs of the student and are contingent on their level of study, whether it be for school examinations or university-level assignments.
Lessons can be structured as follows;
- For school pupils looking to revise either specific topics or entire courses in preparation for class tests, homework assignments or preliminary and end of year examinations
- For university students seeking assistance with planning, researching and/or drafting of essays, reports or presentations for both sub-honours and honours level courses.
- Lessons can also be tailored to university students looking to revise entire modules in preparation for end-of-semester examinations.

My approach to teaching history is very much a holistic one. In a similar fashion to how history is taught in schools, and at university level, I rarely approach any one theme or topic in isolation. Instead my lessons are predicated on the analysis of individual factors in relation to one another, whether they be political, economic or social for example. My lessons therefore will always begin with a brief overview of the period being discussed, the key events, figures, dates etc. However, the lion's share of my lesson plans will then be devoted to the analysis of the aforementioned factors and how they influence the events or themes being discussed. The lesson will then be concluded by encouraging debate amongst students over the importance of one factor over another to foster critical analysis and argumentative skills. For students revising for exams, lesson plans can also be tailored to hone skills more appropriate for exam conditions such as essay writing and enquiry skills.
