About Tryphine

I am a self-employed ESOL tutor. I have been teaching English at all level for 8 years. As
well as TEFL certificates, I hold a Masters degree and have just completed a Ph.D. in
English Research at Brunel University London.
My background in tutoring English and teaching ESOL allowed me the opportunity to hone
my interpersonal communication and listening skills. It also broadened my creativity, thus
enabling me to reach my students more effectively. My ability to convey information in
different and exciting ways was further refined by the students' curious and inquisitive
minds. I benefitted greatly from the students' cultural blend as it broadened my perception
and made me appreciate and respect other people's customs and traditions. It also
indoctrinated me on adaptability.
Being a Ph.D. student taught me discipline and independence. During my three years as a
researcher, I learned how to gather, analyse, and manage information. I became adept at
problem-solving; my focus improved, and so did my confidence. My written and oral skills
also got a considerable boost. All this was reflected in my teaching and the 100,000-word
book and critical commentary I was able to produce at the end of the course.

About the lesson

I'm a strong believer that the success of the student depends on the strength of the teaching he or she receives. I always make it a point to create strong game plans and to make use of comprehensible gestures and body language to impart meaning to new students; create visual lessons (possibly with the aid of video, audio, and similar applications) using graphics, maps media, and semantic storytelling; produce relationships between new data and prior knowledge—harness a student's personal and cultural narrative; and encourage cooperative learning styles that facilitate students working together and sharing unusual words, idioms, and phrases. I also allow for alternative assessments of skill levels by offering tests of oral, visual and physical (acting it out) knowledge.
