About Mary

English: Hi there! :) I'm Mary, I'm from California, my career is in Linguistics/Education and I am currently living in Bogotá, Colombia, thanks to a Fulbright Scholarship. Teaching and tutoring ESL and Linguistics has always been a passion of mine, but I find that the most rewarding part has never been the content, but rather seeing what you, as a student, go on to do with what you've learned. I believe in compassionate, personalized education and believe that you and I are best off not as teacher and pupil but instead as peers and friends.

About the lesson

All Courses: The most important thing for me in all lessons I teach is that your time is used effectively. Whether it's pronunciation practice or syntactic analysis you're looking for, I want to understand your personal needs and design a fun, challenging lesson around that. I'll maximize conversational, interactional time, both to get to know you as a person and to help take full advantage of the time we have together.

ESL Courses: I am a 1000+ hour experienced, TEFL certified ESL teacher who aims to apply my training in formal linguistics to make my language approachable, intelligible, and fun for you. Utilizing deep knowledge of English phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, my classes demystify English and put difficult concepts into terms that you'll understand right away. I design challenging and creative lessons based on your personal language-learning goals, and aim to both build on your own history/experience and draw your attention to facets of this language which you may not have considered before.

English Linguistics: An unfortunate reality of ESL learning is that most grammars and explanations of the language are not just misguided, but entirely inaccurate. Linguistics offers the scientific antidote to this. My training in formal linguistics will help to deepen your grammatical understanding of the language, hone in your pronunciation of difficult phonemes and sound structures, and use deep-structure patterns to accelerate your learning.
