Soweto is the home of the inspirational Soweto Gospel Choir. Since its formation back in 2002, the Soweto Gospel Choir has been gaining musical success. In their first year of being in existence, the choir released their album, "Voices of Heaven," which reached the highest ranking on the Billboard's World Music Chart. The choir was formed so that a select few Soweto-based musicians could show the world that African Gospel music had power. Certainly, through their singing, this is what the choir achieved and has made a statement that Gospel music is powerful.
In Soweto, there are quite a few places that you can venture to find a singing coach near you that will help you to polish your vocal skills. It doesn’t matter what your skill level is, either way, you are bound to find a singing coach in the Soweto area who will willingly assist you in accomplishing your singing goals. Perhaps you want to learn to sing Gospel music in Soweto or even how to sing Jazz. Either way, there will be a singing coach in Soweto that will help you to become a much better singer.
Let’s take a look at some of your options for taking singing lessons in Soweto.
Part of your battle of learning how to sing is learning how to train your ears to become musical ears. It is a known fact that people who play musical instruments are better at really listening to music than singers. In this case, a good starting point to developing this musical ear is by taking classes on how to play a certain musical instrument before you start taking up singing classes. Once you can play a musical instrument, you can thereafter opt to take singing lessons.
One place where you can learn to play a musical instrument and gain musical theory knowledge that is also needed for when you start voice training for beginners, is the Morris Isaacson Centre for Music. The music school was formerly known as the Cape Gate MIAGI for Music Centre. This school is located at the Morris Isaacson School in Soweto. The brain behind the centre for music was MIAGI. However, it was the philanthropist, Mendel Kaplan, who had graciously funded the centre in 2008. 108 students already are studying at this particular music school. All the students receive practical musical theory lessons, choir practise, and ensemble tuition. It is here that you can take instrumental music lessons including learning how to play the piano, guitar, violin, viola, cello, and drum kit. Teachers at this particular centre teach enthusiastic music students using the UNISA Classical and Theory syllabus in combination with the Trinity Rock & Pop syllabus and the school’s uniquely crafted syllabus for Djembe and Pennywhistle.
This is one of the only music schools in South Africa that has formed a distance learning collaboration with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. The distance program shows that traveling the world through music is a possibility. Children at the Morris Isaacson Centre for Music get to be mentored and tutored by the staff and senior students of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire online via a strong internet connection. The reason for the long-distance musical exchange is so that the South African students can benefit by gaining expertise from some of the best musicians based in England and the senior students from the conservatoire benefit from gaining valuable teaching experience. This collaboration was a project initiated back in 2015 and continues to run strong to date. This is an added advantage of this particular music school as there are not many known conservatoires in South Africa. These colleges which focus on teaching music or art are usually found only in Europe as conservatories are predominantly linked to European tradition.
You are lucky in that there are a few places in and around Soweto that do offer vocal training for beginners and instrumental lessons as well. If you are looking for music schools that are less well known as the Morris Isaacson Centre for Music, you surely will find quite a few. Remember, you also have the option of taking private singing lessons with a private singing instructor.
If you choose to attend singing lessons at a singing school in Soweto, you must note that these classes involve learning in a group setting. Joining an ensemble or playing in a choir all require teamwork. There is no, "Me," and "My singing goals" when working in a team. If you feel that you want to progress at your own pace or even at a very fast pace, perhaps you should try reaching out to a private tutor. In fact, by choosing to take singing lessons with a private coach, you will have a personal vocal trainer who is entirely focused on your learning trajectory.
