About Elizaveta

I'm Elizaveta, but I go by Liza. I'm a classically trained artist and have taught drawing and painting since 2021. Today I teach full time, alongside my own work.

I grew up in a village in Russia, five hours south of Moscow, exploring outside every day. When I was about 11, we moved to the UK and I became a city girl overnight. Suddenly I was surrounded by concrete, and it felt like my wings had been cut off. What stayed with me is a love of animals, nature and freedom. Art gives some of that back. You can put yourself somewhere else entirely, or say how you feel in a way words can't quite reach.

I've drawn constantly since I was small. From the age of 14, I trained with one teacher for five years, in three-hour sessions three times a week. That teacher later mentored me in how to teach, which is a different skill from painting and one far fewer artists are ever taught.

As a painter, I'm drawn to animals, people and symbolism. I've always loved portraits, and I'm currently working on a narrative painting called The Wolf King, about a man who abuses his power and the wolves who turn on him.

I'm DBS checked, parents are welcome to stay during lessons. What I want for every student is that same sense of freedom, with the skills to back it up. My studio is located on a convenient route from Richmond and Twickenham, with some students travelling from Kew, Gunnersbury, Hammersmith etc. Buses available nearby are 267, H37, H22, 481 and H20.

Most of us were taught art as self-expression: try this medium, write about your process. Hardly anyone showed us how to actually draw, and the thought process and the structure behind it. That's what I teach. You'll learn to measure what's in front of you, understand how light wraps around a form, and see why one brushstroke belongs and another doesn't.

My lessons follow the classical method. They're based on how Russian and other Eastern European art academies teach, adapted for people who can't draw all day, every day. Every painting is built like a body: the skeleton (sketching and placing), the meat (proportions, light and shadow), the skin (colour and detail) and the freckles (the finishing touches that make it yours).

The curriculum is structured but flexible. I keep adjusting it to target your weaker areas, or we aim straight at your own goal. With my students we generally cover modules, but not limited to work in graphite, charcoal, ink, pastel, oil, watercolour, and explore lino printing, sculpture, anatomy, perspective and copies after the old masters. I don't teach abstract or digital art. If lessons are done in person, I provide all the necessary premium materials for lessons except for: A3 sketchbook and canvases.

Lessons are for ages 8 to adult, and most of my students start as complete beginners. I also help GCSE and A-level students with coursework and portfolios, and adults who did art once and want to get further this time (or also complete beginners). If you'd rather not draw people or animals, for religious or any other reasons, we'll focus on still life, landscape and ornament instead.

A typical lesson lasts 90 minutes to 3 hours (1 hour minimum), so you can get properly into the work. Lessons take place in my studio in Old Isleworth, outdoors around Richmond, St Margaret's and Twickenham when the module suits, or online on Zoom. All materials are included except canvases, and I teach in English or Russian.

I trained privately for five years from the age of 14, in three-hour sessions three times a week, with a teacher who later mentored me in how to teach. I've been teaching since 2021 and I'm DBS checked. One of my students won an art scholarship at 11, and my students describe me as patient, inspiring and methodical.

Tell me what you'd love to be able to draw, and I'll tell you honestly how we'd get there.
