About Philip
Fifteen years of teaching English as a second language has given me the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. Being able to help people as a teacher has made my life richer. My varied professional background - actor, paralegal, restaurant worker - has been a great resource in being able to fulfill my role as a guide and instructor for hundreds of students.

I approach each lesson in several ways. The first is preparation: I make sure that I am familiar with the topic of the course/lesson. Then I create a lesson plan for each session. The second is: listening. I am attentive to the student; each student has her or his strengths and challenges. Third, I communicate as clearly and directly as I can. As an ESL teacher, I am always ready to speak more slowly (and more loudly) than in a teaching environment. And lastly, I do my best to create a safe space. Many of the ESL students I have encountered are initially uncomfortable with American-style education – that is, communicating directly with a teacher. During our first meeting, I always stress that I want the student to be willing to take risks and ask questions. Of course, just my saying those words won’t necessarily alleviate the fear, so I use humor, gentleness, and patience to encourage a feeling of safety in the room, virtual or in person. When other approaches become known to me, I do my best to be open to them.

I offer lessons for up to 4 students per session.
For 1, 2 or 3 students, the rate is $30.00 an hour total (not per student).
For 4 students, the rate is $40.00 an hour total (not per student).
