About Thomas
I am a history nerd! The how's and why's of the past fascinate me as a way to understand the present. I have 22 years of classroom teaching experience at the high school level in private day and boarding schools. My classrooms were always casual and focused on making sure the students felt comfortable expressing themselves without any fear of judgment. I ask students lots of questions to get them to explain and support their ideas and opinions. An answer without evidence to support it is not an answer. I will push back against things they say on the material and expect them to do the same to me. I strive to create creative and productive exchanges of information. An open mind is essential to effective communication and learning. This concept is one of my top focuses in all teaching. I want to explore nearly any topic a student wants to know more about to support greater understanding of the main topics of the course. Creating curiosity and a desire to know more and be a lifelong learner is a top priority in my teaching.

History is the story of who we are! I focus on getting the student to see the connections in history. Nothing happens in a vacuum and all events are shaped by what came before and will influence things to come. Personalities and culture play a huge role in historical events and these need to be taken into account to understand why things happened. The purpose of studying history is to understand how we got to where we are and how to make informed decisions for the future. My typical lesson focuses on getting the student to explain in their own words what they understand from the material they studied and helping them create the connections to understand the bigger picture. I will lead them to fill in the gaps if it appears they have missed anything significant. I also focus on study skills like note taking and effective writing since these are also life skills they will use in many different ways throughout their lives. I am not about just memorizing material, but understanding how what they are learning makes the world they live in the way it is, the goal being to help make a better citizen for the modern world. My lesson are for high school and college level courses.
