About Ioannes

I am a historian, political thinker, and policy professional with over a decade of experience in research, writing, and public engagement. I hold a PhD from the University of Aberdeen, where I remain a Research Fellow, specialising in eighteenth-century British political thought.

I have two monographs under contract with leading academic publishers, and my work has appeared in peer-reviewed journals and public-facing outlets alike.

Beyond academia, I have worked at the heart of British political life — advising in the House of Lords and currently leading parliamentary engagement and democratic innovation work at a major UK think tank.

This combination of scholarly depth and practical political experience allows me to bring real-world context to every subject I teach. I believe the best learning happens through dialogue. Whether we are working through a primary source, structuring a dissertation chapter, or preparing for an exam, I use questioning and discussion to help students develop their own thinking rather than simply absorb information.

About the lesson

I offer tailored tuition in four areas:
History — British and European political history, with particular depth in the eighteenth century, the British Empire, the American and French Revolutions, and the history of political ideas. I work with primary and secondary, GCSE and A-Level students on exam technique and essay structure, and with university students on research methodology, source analysis, and historiographical argument.

Philosophy and critical thinking — From classical political philosophy (Aristotle, Cicero, Locke, Burke) to contemporary ethics and epistemology. I teach through close engagement with primary texts and Socratic dialogue, building students' capacity to read carefully, argue precisely, and think independently.

Politics and public policy — British government and politics, democratic theory, parliamentary procedure, and contemporary policy debates. Ideal for A-Level Politics students, undergraduates, or professionals looking to deepen their understanding of how politics actually works in the UK.

Academic writing and research skills — Essay planning, argumentation, use of evidence, literature reviews, dissertation structure, and scholarly voice. I work with students at every level, from those writing their first university essay to PhD candidates refining their thesis chapters.

Lessons are available online or in person. First sessions always begin with a conversation about your goals so that I can design an approach that works for you.

My headline rate of £55/hour is for undergraduate-level tuition. I adjust rates to reflect the level of preparation and expertise each session requires: GCSE and A-Level tuition: £45/hour. University-level tuition (undergraduate): £55/hour. Postgraduate, PhD supervision support, and dissertation coaching: £70/hour. Professional development and bespoke sessions for adult learners: £70/hour. I offer a free first session so we can discuss your goals and make sure I am the right fit. All rates apply equally to online and in-person sessions.
